Links two cities, from point A to point B, on any route.
Most of them may require a compulsory reservation before boarding the train.
Fares may vary according to travel dates and timetables.
Cheaper fares are available when booking in advance.
 
 
Open Ticket
Open Tickets are open-dated tickets (i.e. do not restrict the traveller to a specific date or time of travel).
   
Valid for travel in 22 European countries.
Valid for a single rail journey from one destination in Europe to another.
Only valid on a specific route as per the vias mentioned on the ticket.
2 months validity, 1st or 2nd class.
Journey must be completed, at the latest, by the end of the day (midnight).
Use of certain high speed or scenic trains requires payment of a special price or supplement.
 
Required Reservation
 
These trains do not require a mandatory reservation, however, reservation is highly recommended since they operate on popular routes. For example: the ICE train in Germany.
 
Global Fare
 
The cost of the ticket and reservation is included in the same fare. Trains that have global fares do not require the additional purchase of an open ticket, and thus, it is necessary to predetermine a specific travel date and time while purchasing the ticket.
     
     
Reservation
A reservation guarantees a seat number in a specific train, on a certain date and time.
   
Sleeper/couchette is available on some routes but require an additional reservation.
Depending on the train category (e.g. ICE) a higher reservation free may apply.
Reservations are non refundable and non exchangeable.
   
     
     
Compulsory Reservation
 
Reservations are mandatory on high speed and scenic trains and all night trains and they are normally included in a Global Fare (ticket + reservation).
Seat reservation is also compulsory on Scenic Trains in Switzerland, valid, with a Swiss Pass, a Swiss Saver Pass, a Swiss Youth Pass, a Swiss FlexiPass, a Swiss Saver FlexiPass or a point to ticket.
